Italian manufacturers, in cooperation with Mazda Company, are preparing a roadster that will get almost 40% of common components taken from new MX-5. This information, with a reference to its sources from Alfa Romeo, was published in Autocar magazine. On the first picture you can see a 2uettottanta concept.
Rear-wheel Spider that was developed on a MX-5 platform of the next generation, will share a front and rear axle with Japanese vehicle. But that’s not all, it will also have same engine compartment and windshield. The overall length of both twins will be around 4 meters, they will have a width of 1.7 meter and a curb weight of about 1000 - 1100 kg.
Such weight is possible thanks to a new model of carbon-fiber material, used in creation of both vehicles.
Insiders also claim that the new products will not contain any of the same body panels. This will become possible because Marco Tenkone, a very famous designer, is working to create Spider’s appearance. Marco is famous for such vehicles as 4C, Ghibli and 2013 Quattroporte, as he was one of the main designers when working for these vehicles. Contrary to rumors, Alfa-Romeo’s roadster will not have any retro hints in its appearance. The basis for such amazing style concept is taken from a 2010 2uettottanta concept car. It will be supplemented with the elements of a brand new Alfa-Romeo 4C.
There’s also more specific information about the engine options of the upcoming Alfa. The Italians are going to use a 1.4-liter turbo MultiAir engine with 170 hp of capacity. It is borrowed from Giulietta model and also has a 6-speed robotic transmission. This unit may even be boosted, but there’s no exact information about that yet. The power plant that will be responsible for this model’s production is the one that is placed in Mazda factory in Japan. Spider will become available by November of 2015, after the release of MX-5 platform that will happen near December of 2013. Prices for new model are, of course, still unknown.
