Fiat 128
Fiat 128

Fiat 128 was sold by Italian automaker Fiat starting from model year 1969 to 1985. It was offered in 2 and 4-door sedan and 3-door station wagon varieties. There was a 5-door station wagon in 1972 manufactured in Argentina but it never saw the shores of Europe. In 1971 a 2-door couple was added to the family which was eventually replaced with a 3-door coupe in 1975. The 128 Powertrain was configured rather for a mid-engine layout than a convertible or sport and was sold as the Fiat X1/9. Between 1969 and 1985 a total of 3, 107, 000 unit was manufactured by Fiat along with its affiliates until 2001 which also included Zastava. The car won the 1970 European Car of the Year for its design.

The Fiat 128 was noted for its spacious interior and luggage space and the front layout designed by Aurelio Lampredi and Dante Giacosa. The path breaking innovation had the entire automobile manufacturers adapting to the front wheel drive. The publicity campaign for Fiat advertised that the mechanical aspects of the 128 just occupy 20% space and Enzo Ferrari used a 128 as his personal transportation. A new plant was built for manufacturing the Fiat 128 in the north west of Turin at Rivalta.
