The Volkswagen Gold which also called as the Volkswagen Rabbit in the United States has been in production since 1974. This is classified as a compact car and based on the Volkswagen Group A platform. The Volkswagen Beetle was its predecessor. The Rabbit has seen seven generation across the globe and it was also marketed as the MK1 and MK5 in the US and Canada and it Mexico it was known as the Volkswagen caribe. The initial Golf MK1 was FWD based with front engine layout and it replaced the earlier rear wheel drive, rear engined, air cooled Volkswagen Beetle. Till 2012 a whopping 29 million unit have been built and it is the best selling model in the world. The Rabbit was initially a 3-door hatchback and later other variants like the 5-door hatchback, wagon/estate, convertible, Golf based notchback sedan/saloon were produced. The cars met all the segment demands that included personal vehicles and high performance hatches.  The Golf has many awards in its history and they included the World car of the Year 2009 and the World Car of the Year 2013 with MK6 and MK7 respectively. For the United States auto market the Golf MK1 donned the name Volkswagen Rabbit.
