Last F-150 with Steel-Body Rolls off the Line in Dearborn as Aluminum preparation begins
According to the Detroit Free Press the current generation F-150 with steel body has left the Ford assembly plant located at Dearborn on Saturday around 1.30 AM.
However the Kansas City facility will continue making the F-150s covered with steel bodies, the Dearborn plant is being dismantled to build new equipment and tooling for manufacturing the 2015 model year trucks with steel body.
The closure of the Dearborn plant will be prolonged till September middle and about 3000 workers will be laid-off temporarily. The recall of employees will be in stages and the first batch containing two crews will be returning on 21, September while a third crew will be coming back on 20, October. The initial operations will be concerned with production models and the plant will be functioning full tilt by January.
While the F-150 being the genuine profit earner for the company but the decision to switch to aluminium body for the highly adored truck is not without some amount of risk. A total of 63, 240 numbers of F-150s were sold in the US in July, which was a full month output, before the switch over costing $359 million starts. The switch over has to be considerably hastened by Ford in order to keep the cash register jingling but without any quality sacrifice.
