Mercedes Benz celebrations of its 120th anniversary were organized in Mumbai last Sunday where fifty classic and vintage models participated in the rally sporting the three spoke emblem. The cars were lineup in the chronological order of their year of birth starting with the 1929 Mercedes and winding up at the black hued 2014 SLS AMG. In spite of their years and wearing they stood tall with their Mercedes heritage.
A 1937 170V followed the 1929 Mercedes and this model with a four cylinder engine remained the top selling Benz car from 1936 to 1939. Beside this Benz stood a 1959 Mercedes 190 and a 1964 220S magnificently decorated with tiny fins at the rear end. Further up the line was a number of roadsters the red 190SL being the first one which came from the 50s along with the iconic small broth the 300SL which had a 1.9 L powerhouse of an engine in its belly offering 105bhp. Interior of the classic car was splendid with neat dials, swathes of leather and three-spoke steering wheel.
The 350SL was another one in the roadster line and it had a powerful V8 3.5 Liter engine of third generation. Several other Mercedes cars from the seventies and eighties, which were not old enough to be called as classic cars sans a few wearing the AMG logos were present. The 190D AMG looked formidable in black and came from the eighties and was in the range of working up 250kmph speed. The 380SEC in AMG badge and body kit looked quite intimidating in bright red.
The rally was flagged off by the Eberhard Kern, CEO of Mercedes Benz India and preceded through South Mumbai to Bandra and back. The rally was focused to heighten the legacy of Mercedes Benz as an automobile brand.
