Sports car Triumph Spitfire is a member of the British motor industry of 60-80th years. Release of Spitfire has been launched in 1962. For eighteen years, the assembly of the model has undergone five large-scale modifications that were aimed primarily at the increasing of capacity.
The first sports cars of the line Triumph Spitfire had 1147 cc four-cylinder engines, and the latest models were equipped with engine with increased volume of 1493. In all generations, except for the fourth and later, the car was produced in a two-door convertible body that did not have a rigid roof. The four-position mechanical transmission has received only minor adjustments in the course of production of Triumph Spitfire.
Maximum speed of Triumph Spitfire of the early 60\'s years of production was close to the mark of 150 km / h. The car could accelerate to 100 km in 17 seconds. It is ironic that fourth generation of the roadster has lost its distinctive high-speed capabilities. Spitfire IV could accelerate only to 140 km / h. But the car was more economical.
In the early 60\'s Triumph produced two promising types of engines: six-cylinder Vitess and a four cylinder Spitfire. In 1966, the company decided to combine these two models into one and to create a more powerful version of the Spitfire. The union of the two power units was a 2-liter Vitess and Triumph Spitfire with such a unit has received index GT6.
Unlike ordinary Spitfire, this modification was made only in the coupe-body with a rigid roof. Style of \"fastback\" was borrowed from the rally version Spitfire\'a, but the model Triumph Spitfire GT6 was a more practical car due to the presence of the rear swing door with a window.
During some time Triumph Spitfire GT6 had a big drivability problem. The car got rid of this defect only in 1968 with the appiarance of the second generation, when designers of the company improved its rear suspension. The next generation, Mk III, appeared in 1970. It has received some stylistic changes and wider wheel arches, which gave the Spitfire GT6 III more aggressive sporty look.
